I can remember the first intentionally designated meditation space I created.
It was in 2002, after returning home from my first ten-day meditation retreat. Having a sacred space devoted to self-reflection helped me to meditate consistently. Since then, this space has evolved to reflect what my self-care has looked like at different points in my life.
Creating these spaces over the years has provided me with a great deal of comfort. It has helped me to cultivate self-trust. Trust in my ability to show up consistently for myself.
For a lot of people, it is hard to follow-through on a new routine if there is not a committed place designated for that activity. For example, a new writer might create a beautiful desk space to inspire them to consistently work on their novel.
So… are you ready to create your self-care space?
Here are some suggestions to get you on your way:
1. Locate the place you will use.
Look around your home to see if there is an area you can designate as an altar space. Plus, enough room on the floor for an embodiment practice (yoga, stretching, etc) where you can place your yoga mat, a blanket, etc.
2. Create a space and an altar that feels inviting.
The altar can be as simple as a small corner table with a plant. Or, it can be as elaborate as a larger table with gems, flowers, plants, and pictures. What is important, is placing items on the altar that are sacred to you.
3. Choose a time that you will go to your space and practice.
I don’t think being in your self-care space at the exact same time every day is necessary. However, I do suggest picking a general time of day. For me, I like to be in my space doing yoga, meditation, and self-myofascial release first thing every morning before anything else. Of course, about 10% of the time I miss this regular schedule and then end up going to my space later in the day. Giving yourself room to have flexibility is great. Yet, having a time that you are more likely to follow through regularly is important for building self-trust. My suggestion would be to try it out for a while in the morning and see how that feels. Then, try it out for a while in the afternoon or evening and see how that jives with your daily rhythms. Notice what seems to be the most aligned time for you and your needs.
Wishing you joy as you create a space devoted to your self-care. I would love to hear from you as you design this sacred place. Feel welcome to leave a comment or reach out and share your process!
With Reverence,
