Sensory Integration
What is sensory integration and how can it help you?
Sensory integration means how we experience, interpret and react to (or ignore) information coming from our senses. Sensory integration is important in all the things that we need to do on a daily basis, such as getting dressed, eating, driving a car, socializing, learning, playing, working and more.
Sensory integration education and strategies can include:
- Education about sensory processing disorder
- Understanding motor skills as it relates to sensory processing
- Accommodation suggestions for the work-place or classroom
- Education about sensory processing and neurodiversity in general
- How to and what strategies to implement in your home and routines
Sensory integration can help if you experience:
- Emotionally reactive to situations that seem overwhelming and/or having difficulty identifying why you are reactive
- Difficulties with balance
- Trouble sitting still
- Poor attention and focus
- Accident prone, clumsiness
- Poor coordination
- Difficulty tolerating strong lights, smells, or sounds
- Uncomfortable with physical touch from others
- Overwhelmed by crowds
- And many other symptoms
How to get started with sensory integration
Radiance Therapy & Wellness is a somatic occupational therapy practice based in San Luis Obispo, CA. We offer in-office, online, or in-home wellness programs.
Sensory integration therapy and education can be incorporated as one part of your program. Or, it can be the primary focus of your care based on your goals and needs.
If you are receiving the care in person, your interventions can include targeted sensory strategies in addition to education on how to create habits and routines that support your unique sensory processing needs.
If you live out of the area you can still receive effective sensory integration support through education that will address your specific sensory profile and sensory integration needs.
